About SAFTE-FAST

SAFTE-FAST is the brand name of Fatigue Risk Management System software provided by the Institutes for Behavior Resources, Inc (IBR). SAFTE stands for Sleep Activity Fatigue Task Effectiveness and is the model invented by our Chief Scientist and President, Dr. Steve Hursh. FAST stands for Fatigue Avoidance Scheduling Tool.

SAFTE-FAST is a two-step, three-process model that estimates sleep patterns around work duties and then estimates performance levels. The three processes involved are circadian function, homeostatic sleep reservoir, and sleep inertia.
The science and software development behind SAFTE-FAST products is continuously advancing to include the latest in sleep research and new features to support the dynamic needs of multiple industries and workforce requirements.
Our solutions include desktop and web applications and an Applications Programming Interface (API) for integration with third-party scheduling systems.

SAFTE-FAST Evolution

The SAFTE model evolved from research conducted by the US Army on sleep deprivation and performance at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Today it is the world’s most widely utilized bio-mathematical model.

SAFTE-FAST solutions are the result of over twenty years of research and experience in biomathematical fatigue modeling software. Our earliest application was VB-FAST; a fatigue avoidance scheduling tool built on a Visual Basic platform, which graphically displayed predictive performance and alertness levels and was commonly referred to as FAST.
It would be extensively tested and subsequently validated by the US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to predict the likelihood and severity of accidents and recognized as one of two approved models.
Today, FAST is still a huge part of who we are. It’s in our product name, and the core principles of Effectiveness, Sleep Reservoir, and a graphical display of predictive performance and alertness are still the foundations of our modern desktop and web-based solutions.
